The Baikal Museum of the Irkutsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences


The Baikal Museum of the Irkutsk Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (BM ISC SB RAS) received the status of an independent research institution in 1993.

The scientific direction of the Baikal Museum is the study of the evolution of the ecosystem of Lake Baikal.

The study on the basis of field and experimental studies of morphological features, species composition, population structure, life cycles on the example of fish, parasitic organisms of Baikal seals and birds.
Improvement of the system for collecting and transmitting real-time information from specially protected natural territories of the Baikal region.
The introduction of innovative technologies to represent the fundamental knowledge of the climate and biota of the Lake Baikal region.
The exposition and educational activities of the Baikal Museum are aimed at shaping the ecological outlook of the population of the Baikal region with the help of innovative scientific, educational and educational technologies.

- The origin of Baikal
The exposition describes the history of the origin and occurrence of Lake Baikal.

- Flora and fauna of Baikal

In the hall on a large monitor, seasonal dynamics of the surface temperature of the water of Lake Baikal are presented in the form of continuous changes in color fields, obtained by using satellite imagery based on the recording of electromagnetic radiation in the thermal infrared range.

- Specially protected natural areas.
The hall looks like a hunting cabin. A large monitor is designed in the form of a window through which visitors can observe the life of land animals in their natural habitat.

- Virtual immersion to the bottom of Baikal
In the model of an underwater habitable vehicle for 22 people with the help of video materials made at GOA “Paysysy” and “Mirs” and presented on 9 plasma screens-illuminators creates the effect of gradual immersion from the surface of Lake Baikal to a maximum depth of 1637 meters.

- Baikal aquariums, with Baikal seal and Baikal endemics.
“Aquarium complex” consists of 9 large flow-type aquariums connected by water exchange with Lake Baikal. Aquariums contain sponges, large “freshwater shrimps” - gammarus, fish, including omul, Baikal sturgeon, brightly colored gobies. The real decoration of the exhibition is one seal that lives in two large aquariums. Of particular interest is the observation of the feeding of the seals at 8.00, 12.00, 15.00, 18.00.

- Underwater exploration of Baikal.
Visitors will see the first diving suits, scuba diving, models of the Pisis and Mir bathyscaphes falling to the bottom of Baikal, films about the first underwater explorers, about modern diving to the bottom of the lake.

- Paysis deep-sea submersibles plunging to the bottom of Lake Baikal
To the left of the central entrance to the Baikal Museum in the transparent pavilion is the deep-sea inhabited apparatus "Paysis-11". Pisis deep-sea vehicles opened an important page in the history of Baikal research in the late 1970s - early 1990s. Now visitors to the museum can personally see the legendary deep-water apparatus "Paysis", which was the first to reach the maximum depths of Baikal Lake Baikal.

- Lake Baikal Arboretum
"Dendropark" is a territory of 4 hectares with a river, rare plants and natural Baikal landscapes: mountain-steppe, forest, meadow-marsh, rocky outcrops.
