Olkhon Island

Olkhon

Olkhon is the largest island of Lake Baikal.

You can get to Olkhon Island by intercity minibus, tickets to Olkhon Island can be purchased at VIVA Hostel in Irkutsk, Sukhe-Bator Street, 8, located 200 meters from the central square of Irkutsk (Kirov Square).

The length of the island is 73.5 km, the width is up to 15 km, the area is 730 km². Resident population - 1,682 people. (for 2017), 1742 people (2018). The distance from Irkutsk along the road to Lake Baikal is 256 km. The Small Sea and the Olkhon Gates are separated from the mainland by Lake Baikal. To the east of the island of Olkhon (Lake Baikal) is the deepest place of Lake Baikal - 1642 meters. The territory of Olkhon (Lake Baikal), together with the adjacent islands, is included in the Baikal National Park located on Lake Baikal.

The Russified name Olkhon comes from the Buryat word “oikhon” - “little forest” or “slightly wooded”, because forests occupy a little more than one third of the island’s territory on Lake Baikal.

Olkhon has all the diversity of nature landscapes of Lake Baikal: there is a steppe with Baikal bays deep into the land and well warmed in summer, completely “Baltic” sandy beaches with dunes that make Lake Baikal unique, hills and coniferous groves of larch trees along the Baikal coast, and dense forests with areas of rarely growing Baikal larches (and almost completely absent Baikal cedars), relict fir forest, and the stern marble cliffs of Lake Baikal, adorned with thick red mosses, and marshes, puff but overgrown with aquatic plants.

The Baikal region is notable for its large total sunshine duration - on the island of Olkhon of Lake Baikal only 48 cloudy days a year. The amount of precipitation per year on Olkhon Island of Lake Baikal does not exceed an average of 140 mm. According to this indicator, Olkhon Island of Lake Baikal can be compared only with some very arid regions of Central Asia. Local residents of Lake Baikal use artificial irrigation for garden crops and haymaking. Another feature of Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal is the almost universally observed soil erosion. A weak, easily destroyed soil and vegetation layer and frequent winds contribute to the rapid removal of humus and sand transport, which makes it difficult to farm on the island of Olkhon (Lake Baikal) and may lead to the emergence of desert landscapes on Lake Baikal. Today it is possible to observe the procession of sands in some places. So, near the village of Khuzhir on the island of Olkhon (Baikal) there is already observed sand covering of the once forest zone.

Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal has many attractions:

- The Shamanka Rock (Lake Baikal Shaman Rock) (formerly called the Stone Temple) is one of the shrines of Asia that has become famous for Baikal: no film about Lake Baikal or a photo album about Lake Baikal can do without its image;
- Kurykanskaya wall on Cape Khorgoy of Olkhon Island of Lake Baikal. On the shores of Lake Baikal in the southern part of Olkhon, there are ruins of a protective wall that cuts across the isthmus of Cape Khorgoy of Lake Baikal. The wall belongs to the Kurykan culture and is one of the best-preserved ancient buildings of the island of Olkhon of Lake Baikal. The wall is made of large Baikal stones without the use of a binder solution. Its height in some places reaches 1.5-2 meters. Visible remains of the moat and earthen wall. Flat stone slabs with spherical and cylindrical depressions, which are supposedly altars for sacrifices on Lake Baikal, were found on the territory protected by a wall.

- The tract Sandy Island Olkhon Lake Baikal.

The Peschanoe tract is located on Olkhon Island of Lake Baikal, 20 km north of the village of Khuzhir on the coast of the Bay of Nyurgan Bay of Baikal. It is distinguished by its sandy dunes occupying an area of about 3 km², on which grows a rare endemic plant that is not found anywhere else in the world except Lake Baikal - Astragalus Olkhon (Latin Astragalus olchonensis), a perennial from the family of legumes of Lake Baikal.

In 1913 there was a project for the creation of a convict prison in this place of Olkhon Island and even a commission to select a specific place on Lake Baikal. But because of the First World War that began in 1914, and the subsequent revolutionary events, the plans then remained only on paper.

Already in Soviet times until the mid-1950s, the establishment of the Gulag was located in the Peschanoe Lake Baikal tract. In the four barracks lived convicts. They worked in the workshop of the Khuzhirsky Malomorsky fish factory located here, catching and carving up the Bakal fish. To this day, the remains of a deadbelt have remained - flooring of boards on sands for the passage of transport to the workshop at Lake Baikal.

Also, special settlers deported from Lithuania, Western Ukraine, Belarus, Poland and others lived in the natural boundary of Peschany Lake Baikal and not far from it. Total of 27 nationalities in Siberia to Lake Baikal. In 1956, they were allowed to return home during the amnesty held then.

On April 16, 2012, by the efforts of local residents, in memory of those events, a wooden worship cross was installed on Olkhon Island on Lake Baikal. Its base is entwined with the remains of barbed wire found nearby. The plate on the cross contains the inscription: "This place remembers the suffering of victims of repression of the mid-XX century."

In summer, Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal, is visited by many tourists from different regions of Russia and abroad. In the picturesque bays of Baikal, you can get up with a tent, the water in them is best warmed by August (up to +18 ° C). On the western shore, in the middle part of Olkhon Island, Lake Baikal, 10 kilometers from the village of Khuzhir, is located. On the island there are almost no dangerous animals and encephalitis ticks. The territory of the Olkhon Island of Lake Baikal is reserved and to stay here you need to get permission in the island forestry.

You can get to Olkhon Island by intercity minibus, tickets to Olkhon Island can be purchased at VIVA Hostel in Irkutsk, Sukhbaatar Street, 8, located 200 meters from the central square of Irkutsk (Kirov Square)

Entrance to the island is carried out by the ferry crossing "MRS - Olkhon Island" from the village of Sakhyurta. Currently, there are three ferries - small “Dorozhnik” (accepts 5-6 cars) and large - “Olkhon gates” and “Semen Batagayev”, each receiving about 17 cars. In summer, the crossing operates all daylight hours at intervals of about an hour. At the entrance to the crossing accumulate many hours of queues of motorists. The average queue passing time is about 3 hours, but in unforeseen situations (the breakdown of one of the ferries) can take up to a day. In winter, instead of the ferry, there is an ice road.

During the freeze-up period, people are transported by a Khivus hovercraft. Also in summer, the island can be reached by cruise ships Irkutsk - Severobaikalsk (the Kometa motor ship, a stop on the island - in the Zagli bay) and Irkutsk - Ust-Barguzin (the Barguzin motor ship, a stop on the island - on the beach south of Burkh Cape).
