Irkutsk

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Catholic church in the city of Irkutsk. Located in the historical center of the city, at the address: Sukhe-Bator Street, 1. Monument of architecture of federal significance.

Due to the fact that the construction of the temple was carried out by the Polish community is also known as the Polish Church. In Poland, the church is listed as a Polish cultural heritage. Currently the Organ Hall of the Irkutsk Philharmonic is located in the temple.

In the first half of the 19th century, the wooden Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was built in Irkutsk; This temple burned down in 1879. In place of the burnt down church in 1884, a new stone church was built, which has been preserved to our time.

With the final establishment of Soviet power in Irkutsk, difficult times have come for the church and the Roman Catholic community. In 1938 the community was dissolved, the worship service finally stopped. And in the building of the church is located East Siberian studio newsreel. The building was not subject to external destruction (although it was rebuilt beyond recognition from the inside).

In 1974-1978, designed by architect G.А. Vyazunova was carried out work on the restoration of the temple. Their task was to return the building to its original appearance with the elimination of the later reconstructions. Inside the church, it was planned to open the Museum of the History of Poles in Siberia. However, later the idea of the authorities to place in this building the organ hall of the Irkutsk Regional Philharmonic Society prevailed.

In 1978-1990, a philharmonic hall was opened in the reconstructed building of the Catholic church, followed by intensive concert and touring practice. In the volume of the apse of the former church, a specially designed concert organ of the German company (at that time of the GDR) "Alexander Schuke" was installed.

When visiting Lake Baikal, it is imperative to visit this historical landmark, as well as Olkhon Island or Listvyanka village on Lake Baikal.
